Banned Books and A Giveaway!

Last week was Banned Books Week and coincidentally i myself had my own little run in with banned books! To make a long story short my school principle tried to censor a review i did for the school newspaper about Jennifer Brown's Hate List because it was supposedly on the districts banned books list! I know WTF! You can read the original post here. On a better note i want to thank all the people who commented on the post supporting me and the newspaper team! I really appreciate the encouraging comments and people like you guys are the ones who will really make the difference-

and coolest of all...
Jennifer Brown (yay!)

I think it's important to voice our opinions but at the same time be open-minded about books and life in general so a huge applause to you! As a cool thank you from Jennifer Brown, she actually offered me a signed copy of Hate List to give away to one of you guys!
"Hi Christina, I read your blog this morning, and was so bummed on your behalf that your hard work was squelched by your principal. I'm sorry about that. Looks like we've both been censored together! LOL!!! Anyway, to say thank you for speaking out about my book being banned in your school, I would like to offer an autographed copy of HATE LIST up for you to give away on your blog." -Jennifer Brown
Cool Huh?

Here's a little something about Hate List!

Plot
Five months ago, Valerie Leftman’s boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saves the life of a classmate, but is implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things they hated. The list her boyfriend used to pick his targets.

Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.

You can find my review for Hate List here!

  1. Ah this is such a great contest!! That was really sweet of her to give this to you to give away! Awesome!
I have read a few banned books, and my favorite is Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is about a girl who gets raped and what happens to her life after that incident. Her friends ditch her and she starts of high school friendless, but no one knows about her getting raped. Its truly a great story. I love it. Check it out if you havent read it!

  4. I wanted to say I have been teachng for just a few years at the HS level and wanted my students to read The Color Purple and of all the insane things my Principal told me if was banned and on some list (as a huge no no) that the school board used to decide these things. I was crushed. Thanks for the chance to win this!

  5. Wicked Awesome giveaway! As for banned books, I know I have read many that are on the list, when I was in school. Of Mice and Men, Grapes of Wrath, Lord of the Flies are just a few examples. I grew up to be a pretty decent person if I say so myself. I wasn't brainwashed or led astray nor did I have my pysche damaged for having read them. If anything I found reading such books enriching and enjoyable. They remain favorites of mine to this day.

What you read should be your choice, your preference. I find it insane someone else should choose what would be best for me.

  7. I am a high school Teacher Librarian and love Banned Books Week. What a great chance to talk to my awesome students about books that we all love but someone else banned. I get our staff to read from banned books in front of the library every day during BBW. It's really fun to hear great books read aloud and we always get a little crowd of students listening in. And, I was the yearbook advisor for 11 years...you'll be pleased to know I never edited out content!

+1 comment: A lot of the books that are banned were required reading when I was in school. They are great books and I think it is insane for them to be banned. One of my favorites on the list is Of Mice and Men. I'm glad I was able to read it in school because otherwise I never would have bothered reading this great book.

  9. For Banned Books Week I went to an Ellen Hopkins signing! She read from her newest book Tricks, talked about her inspiration for her characters, and talked about the banning of her books... it was all very interesting. Ellen wrote a poem that represents book banning wonderfully... I'm dorky and put it up on my wall! :)

+1 I think it's a bit useless to ban books... people who really want to read them will get access to them eventually. It's a bit like the Nazi burning books, really. A few years ago my German teachr told me that in Germany Hitler's book "Mein Kampf" is banned, and that he actually had to come to Italy (where I live) to read it. I don't agree with banning it... Yes, it's a dangerous book, but I think it's important as a historical document. We read a bit of it in school when studying Nazism. Maybe there wouldn't be so many neo-Nazi groups in Germany if they had actually studied what Nazism was all about.

+1 I simply hate banning books. I don't think it's effective at all. I think, if anything, it makes people want to read the book more. I think things would just be so much better if people just let everyone read what they want to read. =]

    +1 Banned Book comment:
I never really got involved with the BBW before, but this year I tried to have some posts and discussions, as well as links to others who were discussing the topic on my blog. It was interesting to see how everyone reacted to and supported BBW. It made me a little bit more appreciative of the fact that my school system didn't care enough to ban any books from our libraries and my 5th grade Language Arts teacher who thought that Ronald Dahl was a wonderful way to begin each class.

  15. I have never actually been directly affected by a banned books-there was never anything in my school or from my parents (I don't think my mom was thrilled when I started reading romance at 12 but she didn't stop me). There were rumors in my high school though that a collection of Karl Marx writings was taken off the shelves of the library but I never had verification of that. I feel so lucky that no one has ever impended my access to a book! Thanks for the contest!

  19. +1- I really hate the fact that books get banned. I think it's mostly just adults trying to control how much me know about certain stuff and I really think it's stupid. I don't really have a favorite book that's been banned but I know Looking for Alaska by John Green was challenged but I'm not sure if it was banned. I love John Green, I think he's an amazing author and I don't get why someone would want to get one of his books banned or even challege one of them.

I can't believe the books that schools are banning
now...its unbelievable. I think its parent who should decide what is appropriate for their children to read.

  22. My two favorite banned books are Crank and Glass by Ellen Hopkins. They are both so amazing and Ellen is so great and it kills me to think that parents would rather turn a blind eye toward what she has to say about her daughters experience with drugs instead of showing their children the affects of them at an early age.

I don't think someone should be able to ban books because it's the parent's decision what their children can read. One person shouldn't be able to have a say in what your kids and can read, or do, or say.

I always get so riled up on this subject because some of my favorite books have been challenged or banned and it's something that should never be allowed.

  23. This sounds like an absolutely awesome book! Please enter me.

    My favorite banned books are:
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'engle

To tell you the truth I don’t understand WHY these books were banned. I was NINE when I read them for SCHOOL! Anyway, I think the whole banned books thing is ridiculous. I mean, I’ve heard of cases where a parent of a elementary student will challenge certain books being available in the school library. What do they think that their kid doesn’t have access to a public library? Plus, they can always borrow the book from a friend. BTW, I heard about banned books on just about every book blog I visited.

+1 Comment: I heard they banned Just Listen by Sarah Dessen at a school library in Texas. I can't believe they would do that! I mean, I understand that parents and teachers are concerned about what their kids are reading... but I see nothing wrong with this book, among many! It teaches girls a great lesson and it should not be banned!
